THE DISTRICT
The Fire District which was founded in 1957 exists as a Subsidiary
Special District to the
City of
American Canyon. The
District's service area is fifteen square miles in size and covers approximately
17,000 in population. Due to a large expanse of residential growth, the
build-out population is expected to reach 30,000. Services We Provide: History of the District: In the early seventies staffing was again increased to a minimum of two personnel, twenty-four hours daily. At that time the Fire District had a insurance service office rating of a Class 5. (ISO rates all Departments within California as Class 1 being the best, Class 10 the worst, and insurance premiums are based on the rating.) During this time the governing body was a independent, five person, elected Board of Directors. Members were elected at large. In the 1980's the District faced financial problems resulting from the passage of Proposition 13. The Fire District was successful in a voter approved Fire Service Fee which makes up the loss in revenues. This Fire Service Fee was passed with the required two-thirds majority in favor. The Fire District also passed a one-time tax on new construction by the two-thirds majority. This is known as the Mitigation Fee and is restricted funds only to be used for construction of new facilities and purchase of major new equipment. Current minimum staffing is four personnel on duty per twenty-four hour shift. Administrative staffing is one full-time Fire Chief, one Assistant Fire Chief, and one Administrative assistant. The Fire District current Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating is a Class 3. |
